Celebrating evil: Reactions to the Islamic Palestinian October 7 Attacks
The Arab Islamic "Palestinian" Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 generated widespread condemnation internationally, while reports also documented instances of celebration, expressions of approval, or other positive reactions to the attack in parts of the Arab Palestinian territories, and elsewhere: Arab Muslim immigrants in the West, pro Palestine groups, etc. Reported examples included public celebrations, distribution of sweets, celebratory gunfire, demonstrations, social-media posts, statements by political or militant figures, and reactions by individuals and organizations.
The incidents described below vary considerably in nature and evidentiary basis. Some involve recorded statements or video footage, while others concern social-media activity, demonstrations, or made by journalists and advocacy organizations.
Gaza and the West Bank
On October 7, 2023, following the Hamas-led assault on Israeli communities near the Gaza border, videos circulated showing Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank distributing sweets, firing guns into the air, and celebrating. The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI)[1] reported that the footage showed Palestinians celebrating following Hamas's invasion and the massacre in the Gaza envelope.
A March 2024 article by Mike Cosper in Christianity Today[2] argued that the ideological background of Hamas helped explain some of the reactions to the attack. The article stated that although the brutality of the attacks shocked international opinion, they were greeted with joy in some Palestinian streets, and that some ordinary civilians, rather than only militants, participated in the desecration of bodies brought into Gaza. The article also discussed a telephone call between a Hamas terrorist and his parents as an example of what it described as an ideology that dehumanized Israelis.
Mahmoud Afana telephone recording
A later report concerned Mahmoud Afana, who was identified[3] as a Hamas terrorist involved in the October 7 attack. On September 6, 2025, it was reported that recordings had revealed Afana boasting to his parents about killing Israelis while inside Kibbutz Mefalsim.
Afana told his father that he was speaking from a Jewish woman's phone and that he had killed her and her husband. He said that he had killed ten people "with my own hands" and told his father to check WhatsApp to see the dead. He also said, "Your son killed Jews." His father responded, "May Allah protect you." Afana subsequently asked for his mother and repeated that he had killed ten people. His mother responded by wishing him safety and a peaceful return.
Investigators subsequently confirmed that the phone Afana used belonged to one of the victims and had been recovered in the Gaza-border area. Authorities found the full recording of the call on the phone.

The New York Post reported[4] that hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrators, organized by the Democratic Socialists of America, rallied in Manhattan. Demonstrators stomped on and burned an Israeli flag.
One attendee was photographed displaying an image of a swastika on a mobile phone, one day after the Hamas attack in which hundreds of Israelis had been killed.
On October 9, The Times of Israel reported[5] on competing demonstrations in New York City. According to the report, Israel supporters gathered to mourn those killed and express solidarity, while some pro-Palestinian activists chanted "700" [at the time, on Oct 7, the initial death toll of Israelis were known to be 700] and expressed approval of the attack and what they described as Palestinian "resistance."

JNS subsequently reported[18] that children at the Azzun Elementary School for Boys in Qalqilya participated in a rally celebrating the October 7 attack and sang "Palestine is ours, ours, ours." The article cited IMPACT-se's broader assessment that the Palestinian Authority curriculum contained antisemitism, incitement to violence, demonization of Israel, and promotion of jihad.
In August 2026, The Jerusalem Post reported[19] that Palestinian Authority schools had used the October 7 attack in mathematics exercises. Nine-year-old pupils were also praised by a teacher for writing questions relating to martyrdom, including child sacrifice / "martyrdom."
