The Socialist Unity Party of Germany (German: Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands SED) was the only political party in the German Democratic Republic. It was founded in 1946 as the SPD was forced to merge with the Communist Party of Germany. In the wake of the revolution of 1989/90 the SED changed its name into Party of the Democratic Socialism (Partei des Demokratischen Sozialismus). In 2007 the PDS merged with the Electoral Alternative Labour and Social Justice and called the new party The Left.
