Sir Ed Davey (born 1965), or the "Snivelling Cretin", has been Member of Parliament for Kingston and Surbiton in Surrey since 2017, having previously served as such between 1997 and 2015. He has also been leader of the Liberal Democrats since 2020.
Under the Cameron-Clegg coalition between the Tories and the Liberal Democrats, Davey served as Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change. In his role, he was described in March 2016 by James Dellingpole of Breitbart as "everything that’s wrong with Britain’s energy policy" and that his title of "Sir" exposed the worthlessness of the British honours system.[1]
In 2020, Davey snitched on other politicians, such as Nigel Farage, for allegedly breaking lockdown rules during the Chinese Communist Party pandemic.[2] Ed Davey spent the early days of his party's 2024 United Kingdom general election campaign by embarrassing himself in failed stunts such as failling off a paddleboard in the Lake District. Ed Davey is known for spreading a conspiracy theory in January 2025 which accused Elon Musk of interfering in UK democracy after the libertarian billionaire criticised the UK establishment for covering up grooming gangs (mainly operated by males of Pakistani origin) in British towns and cities.[3]
Career
Ed Davey became the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for the Surrey constituency of Kingston and Surbiton in the 1997 United Kingdom general election, which was held on 1 May that year. He won a marginal victory (of just under 37%) against the Tory Richard Tracey, who had served as the MP for Surbiton (which was abolished at that election) since 1983.
On 26 February 2008, Ed Davey was thrown out of the House of Commons for angrily protesting the decision by the Speaker of the Commons, Michael Martin, not to allow a vote on European Union membership.
Ed Davey was outseated in the 2015 UK general election, in which the Liberal Democrats lost 49 seats from 57 in 2010.
Davey re-gained his seat in the general election held on the 8 June 2017, with 44.7% of the vote.
