The friend argument is a logical fallacy which is typically used to defend a bigoted person by arguing they have positive associations with particular members of the said group they discriminate against. Examples include:

  • denying the racist associations and legacy of Margaret Sanger in arguing she was friends with several black leaders[primary ref 1]
  • attempting to "refute" arguments of Black Lives Matters' antisemitic usage of anti-Zionist tropes by pointing to their support from left-wing Jewish organizations[primary ref 2]
  • denying the antisemitic activities of the Ukrainian government on the grounds that Zelensky has Jewish heritage[1]
