Greater Manchester is an area in north-western England, mainly covering south-east Lancashire, but also including a large area of north-east Cheshire, plus smaller areas of Derbyshire and Yorkshire. An alternernative name for the area is SELNEC, an acronym of "South East Lancashire North East Cheshire". The main city is Manchester. It also includes the city of Salford and the towns of Altrincham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport and Wigan as well as numerous other towns.
The area is a county for the purposes of lieutenancy and a mayoral region. The mayor as of 2025 is Andy Burnham of the Labour Party. The Greater Manchester Combined Authority also covers the same area. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and Greater Manchester Police (GMP) also serve the same area.
Name
Greater Manchester is named for the Greater Manchester Urban Area which, with a population of over 2.2 million spread across south-east Lancashire and north-east Cheshire, is the second most populous conurbation in England after the London built-up area. Not all areas of the county for the purposes of lieutenancy are in the built-up area. Wigan, for example, is generally not considered to form a part.
Defunct metropolitan council
Greater Manchester County Council was the metropolitan council responsible for the area between 1974 and 1986. Local government responsibilities were divided between the metropolitan council itself and the borough councils of the ten metropolitan boroughs that constituted the council area. Following the abolition of metropolitan councils in 1986, the 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester have been responsible for all local government functions within their area.
Altrincham
This town is approximately eight miles south-west of Manchester city centre. Until 1974 it was in the county of Cheshire. The Manchester Metrolink light rail system's southern terminus is at the railway and bus station.
Altrincham grew as a market town and historically there were cotton mills.
Altrincham Football Club play in the English Blue Square Premier League (soccer).
Its population is 67,061 (2001).
