Oldham
Oldham is a town in Lancashire, England, approximately seven miles north-east of Manchester city centre. It is situated between the River Irk and the River Medlock. It is the namesake of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, which is administered by Oldham Council, whose admin HQ is Oldham Civic Centre.
Historically cotton-spinning and textile manufacture were key industries in the town; by 1871, Oldham had more spindles than any country in the world bar the United States and by 1909, its cotton output was higher than that of France and Germany combined.[1] Coal-mining and engineering have also been important in the town.
It is proposed that the railway line running through the town will become part of the Manchester Metrolink network.
Oldham Athletic Football Club play in the English Football League One (soccer).
Its population is 103,544 (2001).
