Ross-shire
Ross-shire, known as the County of Ross or simply Ross, is a county of the Scottish Highlands. The county borders Inverness-shire to the south and Sutherland to the north. The county of Cromartyshire consists of multiple detached parts scattered across Ross-shire. Ross-shire was established by 1661, although its origins as a territorial subdivision date back the the province of Ross, first documented in the 10th century.
The county can be divided into three parts; Easter Ross and Wester Ross on the mainland, and the Isle of Lewis in the Hebrides.
Administration
The main body of Ross-shire, namely Easter and Wester Ross, is administered by Highland Council. The Outer Hebridean parts of the county fall under the administrative area of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Gaelic for "Council of the Western Isles")
