Inverness-shire

Inverness-shire (Scottish Gaelic: Siorrachd Inbhir Nis), or the County of Inverness, is a shire county in northern and western Scotland. It is the largest of the 34 counties of Scotland, with an area of 4,211 sq mi (10,906 km2), and also the second largest in Great Britain behind Yorkshire.

The mainland of the county is within the Scottish Highlands, and contains some of Scotland's best-known natural landmarks such as Loch Ness, Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in the British Isles) and Glen Coe. The county also contains part of the island archipelago of the Inner Hebrides, including the Isle of Skye, and all of the Outer Hebrides with the exception of the Isle of Lewis. To the north lies Ross-shire, with Nairnshire, Moray, Banffshire and Aberdeenshire lying to the east. The county is bound by Perthshire to the south and Argyllshire to the south-west. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the west. The county town is the city of Inverness, which lies at the head of the Moray Firth in the far-east of the county.
