The psalmist David wrote: "The fool has said in his heart, 'There is no God.'"

This article focuses on the relationship between atheism and sin.

According to the Book of Psalms:

"The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God.' They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good." Psalms 14:1 (ESV)

Dr. Paul M. Elliott wrote about atheism and sin:

Misappropriating Biblical terminology, New Atheists speak of "evil" - "truth" - and "justice". But in the New Atheist view, religion is the root of all evil, the ultimate "truth" is that there is no God, and the ultimate "justice" is the eradication of faith. The monstrosity and death we see in the world are simply part of the Darwinian package. The chilling moral of New Atheism's doctrine of sin is this: The smartest and strongest will always win.

New Atheists openly ridicule the Biblical doctrine of sin. Yet, they misappropriate the Biblical terms of good and evil. Religion, they say, is the root of all evil.

And, we know from the Biblical record, the history of mankind outside Scripture, and from personal experience (if we are honest about it) that the Bible's teaching on original sin is an accurate picture of the state of mankind both collectively and individually. The world is in the condition it is in - hatred, bloodshed, disease, death, and chaos - because of original sin. Because the Bible presents an accurate picture, God's holy law (and our inability to keep it) shows us our desperate condition.[1]

Not possessing a religious basis for morality, which can provide a basis for objective morality, atheism is fundamentally incapable of providing a coherent system of morality.[2] See also: Atheism and ethics and Atheism and the problem of evil

For example, atheists have been the biggest mass murderers in history (see: Atheism and mass murder). Dr. R. J. Rummel's mid estimate regarding the loss of life due to atheistic communism is that communism caused the death of approximately 110,286,000 people between 1917 and 1987 (See also: Atheism and communism).[3]

The Christian Post reports about the Christian philosopher James S. Spiegel's book The Making of an Atheist:

Spiegel, who converted to Christianity in 1980, has witnessed the pattern among several of his friends. Their path from Christianity to atheism involved: moral slippage (such as infidelity, resentment or unforgiveness); followed by withdrawal from contact with fellow believers; followed by growing doubts about their faith, accompanied by continued indulgence in the respective sin; and culminating in a conscious rejection of God.[4]

Got Questions Ministries indicates about atheism, sin and rebellion:

The main goal of those under the influence of the sin nature is to make himself a god, to have complete control over his life, or so he thinks. Then religion comes along with obligations, judgments, and restrictions, while atheists presume to define their own meaning and morality. They do not want to submit to God because their hearts are at “enmity against God,” and they have no desire to be subject to His Law. In fact they are incapable of doing so because their sin has blinded them to truth (Romans 8:6-7). This is why atheists spend most of their time complaining and arguing not about the scriptural proof texts, but about the “dos and don’ts.” Their natural rebelliousness detests the commandments of God. They simply hate the idea that anything—or any One—should have control over them. What they do not realize is that Satan himself is controlling them, blinding them, and preparing their souls for hell.[5]
