Research by the scientific establishment into the causes of homosexuality frequently assumes a philosophy of determinism, treating homosexuality as an identity or orientation which is "formed", rather than a behavior which is chosen.

Some consider homosexuality to be a choice, while others (notably homosexual activists) consider it to be a type of genetic defect in humans. No creature other than humans have this defect, exclusive homosexuality seems to be a phenomenon among humans alone.
