Claire McCaskill, born July 24, 1953 (age 73), is currently the junior United States Senator from the state of Missouri and a member of the Democratic Party. She defeated Republican Senator Jim Talent in 2006 with 50% of the vote.

A millionaire, McCaskill was criticized concerning the "Air Claire" scandal relating to how she tapped into her Senate budget to fund her private airplane.[1]

Her challenger in 2012 is movement conservative Todd Akin, and Democrats will have a difficult time reelecting her. The Democratic National Convention decided against holding it in Missouri, perhaps in part because of the political weakness of Claire McCaskill and her need to distance herself from the Obama Administration in order to have any chance of being reelected.

On September 6, 2006, she publicly stated that "George Bush let people die on rooftops in New Orleans because they were poor and because they were black," when addressing Hurricane Katrina victims.

McCaskill was the co-chair of Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. She criticized John McCain's age, saying "Other people talk about his melanoma. We’re talking about a reality here that we have to face." [2] Claire McCaskill has voted with a majority of her Democratic colleagues 78.4% of the time during the current Congress. [3] She supported the 2009 Economic Stimulus Package.
