Surfing
Curran was raised and still resides near Oxnard, California. He was born in the San Fernando Valley, but spent some of his childhood in the southern Riverside County city of Temecula, California. Temecula is roughly an hour from the ocean, so at age 5 his father started driving him to the beach every weekend and taught him to surf. Curran received his first sponsorship at age eleven from McCrystal Surfboards and was competing as a professional surfer by age sixteen.
Curran qualified for the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) pro tour in 1998. IN 1999 Curran finished 6th overall on the world tour winning 2 events at "T&C Lananau Pro" & "Matsumoto Kiyoshi Japan Pro". He is a 2-time winner of the "Malibu Invitational"(2009,11) & in 2011 he won the "Katin Pro Am".
Curran is considered to be a pioneer of surfing's "Aerial Revolution" of the late 1990s and is famous for completing a full rotation, upside-down flip in two-foot surf at Rocky Point in Hawaii during winter of 2005. This popular aerial achievement has become known worldwide as simply "The Flip".
Tim Curran's Brother Nathaniel Curran is also a pro surfer winning the "US Open of Surfing in 2007".
