The Tony Martin Show
The Tony Martin Show is a forgotten 15-minute weekly musical variety television series hosted by singer Tony Martin (1913-2012), which aired in NBC prime time from April 26, 1954 to February 27, 1956, during the "Golden Age of Television." The program was produced by Bud Yorkin (1926-2015) and featured the singing group The Interludes and the orchestras of Hal Bourne and David Rose (1910-1990), the latter also affiliated with The Red Skelton Show.[1]
Martin began each episode with a song at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on Mondays. Then he chatted with a celebrity guest and urged viewers to remain for the 15-minute nightly newscast, which followed his program.[2] At times, Martin performed popular tunes, such as "Secret Love" by Doris Day (1922-2019), Cole Porter's "All of You," "All the Things You Are," "Here," "There's No Tomorrow," and "Rainy Day."[1]
The first two episodes were filmed in New York City, but then the program shifted to Los Angeles, California, for the remaining segments. Singers Margaret Whiting (1924-2011) and Dinah Shore (1916-1994) each appeared as guest stars.[1] Shore had her own 15-minute program on NBC from 1951 to 1956, after which she launched her one-hour Dinah Shore Chevy Show.
"Our Waltz" served as the series theme song.[3] There is an episode of The Tony Martin Show available in the public domain.[4]
For sixty years, Martin was married until her death to the popular dancer Cyd Charisse (1922-2008).
