Spiro Theodore Agnew, also known as Ted Agnew (November 9, 1918 – September 17, 1996), was Vice President under Richard Nixon from 1969 to 1973. He was Governor of Maryland (1967-1969) before becoming Nixon's running mate. As governor he was a Moderate Republican who supported civil rights and worked to repeal the laws then in existence prohibiting interracial sex. He supported drafting Nelson Rockefeller for the GOP presidential nomination in 1968, but after Rockefeller failed to enter the race as soon as anticipated, switched his support to Nixon. He took bribes and pled "no contest" to failure to report income on the bribes. He resigned the Vice Presidency on October 10, 1973. He is the only Vice President to resign because of criminal charges.
