Heworth, Yorkshire

Heworth lies in the North Riding of Yorkshire and is a suburb of York, lying around 4 miles north-east of the city centre. Historically a village in its own right, it is still occasionally referred to as such.

The suburb boasts the impressive Holy Trinity Church, which dates from the 1860s. Also during the late 19th century, there was some light industry in the area with some potteries and a windmill. In the more distant past, the village of Heworth was the site of the Battle of Heworth Moor (1453) as part of the Percy-Nevile feud, as well as the Meeting on Heworth Moor (1642), where Charles I went to Heworth to gather support in the build-up to the First English Civil War.
