Columbus Day is an federal holiday in the United States, in honor of Christopher Columbus. It is always celebrated on the second Monday in October.

It is celebrated by many North Americans of Italian descent.

In recent years this holiday has become increasingly under attack by liberal groups who claim Columbus' actions destroyed indigenous culture; as such it has commonly been renamed Indigenous Peoples' Day in liberal jurisdictions. Interestingly, it is the only Federal holiday which is not also a state holiday in conservative Texas.

In the North American versions of the Animal Crossing series of slice-of-life video games, the holiday is represented as Explorer's Day.

Columbus Day is one of two Federal holidays (Veterans Day being the other) on which stock markets are open for trading.
