A chess hustler is someone who plays chess against any challenger on public tables, typically in Union Square and Washington Square Parks in New York City, and sometimes in other urban locations like Cambridge, Massachusetts, or Muscle Beach in[Santa Monica, California. Some of the best chess hustlers make a living off of small bets, while others simply play for enjoyment. Their often-irreverent comments during a game are often highly entertaining.

At times top players have ventured onto the turf of chess hustlers, which are popular videos on YouTube -- often more popular than famous chess matches by grandmasters or traditional fare such as music and famous movie videos.
