Coniston is a Lake District village and civil parish in the Furness area of Lancashire. It sits between the Coniston Fells, the highest point of which and in the County Palatine as a whole is the Old Man of Coniston (2,632.62 ft), and Coniston Water, the fifth-largest natural lake in England by surface area.[1]

Historically, the main industry in the local area was copper mining, which began during the reign of Elizabeth I (reigned 1558-1603) and lasted until the 1950s.

Old Man of Coniston

The Old Man of Coniston, sometimes called the Coniston Old Man,[2] is the highest point within the traditional county Lancashire.[3] It has a height of 2,632.62 feet (802.42 m) above sea-level. It sits 1.82 miles from the village. According to the Aetherius society, a new religious movement founded by Shropshire-born George King (1919-1997) and based in London and Los Angeles, the Old Man of Coniston is one of the world's 19 sacred mountains (alongside 4 other peaks in England, and various mountains in Scotland, Wales, France, Switzerland, the USA, Tanzania, Australia and New Zealand).
