Vassal state

A vassal state is a junior partner in an alliance which pays tribute to an empire. Despite common rhetoric, vassal states have effectively ceded their sovereignty to make their own decisions in regard to foreign policy, military alliances and obligations, and foreign trade but retains autonomy for most internal affairs.
