Cumberland is a county of the Anglo-Scottish border region and is England's most northwesterly county. For statistical purposes, it constitutes a part of the North West of England. It includes the city of Carlisle and the towns of Cockermouth, Maryport, Workington and Whitehaven, as well as much of the Lake District national park.
It borders the Scottish counties Dumfriesshire and Roxburghshire to the north. It mainly borders Northumberland, the other English border county, to the east, with a shorter border with County Durham. To the south, Cumberland mainly borders Westmorland, bordering the Furness peninsular of Lancashire along the River Duddon to the south east.
