Yr Hen Ogledd

Yr Hen Ogledd (Welsh: The Old North) is a historic region of Great Britain, broadly covering modern-day northern England and southern Scotland. It refers to the Brythonic-speaking inhabitants of these regions in the sub-Roman period and Early Middle Ages (5th-10th century). Stretching roughly from the River Mersey in the south to the Firth of Forth in the north, Yr Hen Ogledd covered a similar area to the later Anglian kingdom of Northumbria. The kingdoms which make up Yr Hen Ogledd include Rheged, which later formed a part of Strathclyde, Elmet (centred on modern-day Leeds) and Gododdin.
