Usera Tunnel massacres
The Usera Tunnel Massacres of 1937 were a series of brutal executions that took place during the Spanish Civil War in the Usera district of Madrid, Spain. The massacres involved the killing of political prisoners and suspected enemies of the Second Spanish Republic by Republican forces in response to ongoing military conflicts with the Nationalist forces of Francisco Franco.
Background
During the Spanish Civil War, Madrid was a crucial battleground between Republican and Nationalist forces. By 1937 the city was under siege by Franco’s Nationalist army. Various factions, including anarchists, communists, and socialist militias, began targeting suspected Francoist sympathizers and other "counter-revolutionaries" for murder.
Massacres
In October of 1937, as the siege of Madrid continued, Republicans spread the rumor that safe passage was possible to the Nationalists upon paying a bribe to disaffected soldiers, and that such a tunnel was in the basement of a building in the Usera district.
In at least eight different instances, civilians were taken to the building and were assaulted, interrogated, tortured, and then ultimately executed.
Aftermath
Following the Nationalist victory in the Spanish Civil War in 1939, many of the atrocities committed by Republican forces were discovered. The mass grave in Usera was unearthed in 1939 and documented by Franco's regime.
The authorities found at least 67 bodies that were identified. An estimated 20 or more other bodies, in various states of decay, were also found in the same mass grave.
Prosecutions
Several of the perpetrators were later prosecuted by the Franco regime. The one individual most culpable, Duran, escaped from Spain and was never seen again.
Legacy
The Usera Tunnel Massacres remain a haunting reminder of Republican war crimes and violence against civilians. In modern Spain, the memory of the civil war is still divisive, and efforts to reckon with the past, including the left-wing atrocities committed in places like the Usera Tunnel, continue to be suppressed from the historical memory by the left-wing elites in firm control of politics and culture.
