There was no there there or the present tense 'There is no there there' is an idiom originating with a comment Gertrude Stein made about Oakland, California. It's meaning is to convey a lack of substance, just an illusion. It differs from 'there, there' which is generally a phrase used while consoling someone.

The expression has seen widespread adaptation in the modern English language lexicon. For an example of use, RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel was recently quoted saying, "The House Intelligence Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee are investigating everything having to do with Russia and I expect we will find there is no there there when it comes to the Trump campaign."
