Tartarus (Greek mythology)

Tartarus, in Greek mythology, lies far beneath the disk of the world, deeper even than Hades' kingdom of the underworld. It is used as the ultimate of prisons, unpleasant and inaccessible, and reserved for those whose deeds greatly displeased the gods. Each man condemned to Tartarus was given a unique, cruel punishment, often tailored to their own particular transgression (compare the idea of contrapasso in Dante's Inferno). Some of the more well known mythological characters imprisoned in Tartarus include Tantalus and Sisyphus.
