Mystery:Did Jesus Suffer More After Crucifixion?

It is commonly assumed -- and widely portrayed by Hollywood -- that Jesus suffered most during the Passion, including the Crucifixion.

But afterward Jesus is traditionally held to have visited Hell[1], and by His own accounts that is much worse than anything on Earth. Did Jesus suffer more in visiting Hell? It seems unlikely, since he has the keys of Death and Hell, and the greatest suffering of a prisoner is inability to escape the prison. (Revelation 1:17-18).

  1. Traditional wording of the Nicene Creed is "He descended into Hell". There He is thought to have freed the Hebrew patriarchs; although this belief is de-emphasized by many modern Christians, the "harrowing of Hell" is repeatedly alluded to in Dante and was a common subject in Renaissance painting.
