Montessori schools
Montessori schools are elementary schools that emphasize a type of phonics for learning how to read, and individual freedom for each child to pursue his or her own interests. Many successful Americans, including Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, originally went to Montessori schools.
In the United States there are about 5,000 Montessori schools, and perhaps surprisingly about 500 of these programs are located within public schools,[1] There is apparently no trademark allowed on the term "Montessori school," so the programs can vary.[2]
Illinois
"For the 2023 school year, there are 158 montessori private schools serving 11,579 students in Illinois. ... The average tuition cost is $12,757, which is higher than the Illinois private school average tuition cost of $8,658."[3] Religiously affiliated Montessori schools account (typically Catholic or Christian) account for 8% of the total.
Phonics
Montessori uses a kind of phonics but introduces the alphabet differently from its typical order.[4] Sometimes it is called the Montessori Alphabet, as letters are group differently in sets of 4 letters apiece.
