The Lugansk People's Republic is a self-proclaimed republic in the Lugansk Oblast, Ukraine. Until May 2015 the state formed a union (called Novorossiya) together with the Donetsk People's Republic. After the Lugansk People's Republic declared its independence, the Ukrainian government started an offensive. On May 11, 2014 referendums were held, with a majority voting for the region's sovereignty.[1]
