Lesley Stahl
Lesley Rene Stahl (born December 16, 1941) is an American television journalist. She has spent most of her career with CBS News, where she began as a producer and on-air reporter in 1972. Stahl is best known for her work as a correspondent for the news magazine 60 Minutes, a position she has held since 1991.
Early life
Lesley Stahl was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, and raised in Swampscott, Massachusetts. She graduated from Wheaton College in 1963, where she earned a degree in history. Her interest in journalism developed after college, leading her to pursue a career in television news.
Career
Stahl began her journalism career at Boston's WBZ-TV as a producer and on-air reporter. In 1972, she joined CBS News, where she became known for her coverage of the Watergate scandal. She was one of the "face" reporters who regularly appeared on television covering the evolving story, which eventually led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.
In 1983, Stahl became the moderator of Face the Nation, CBS's Sunday morning public affairs program, a position she held until 1991. That year, she joined 60 Minutes, where she gained a reputation for her interviews. She has conducted interviews with numerous world leaders and has covered major national and international events, earning her several prestigious journalism awards.
In addition to her work on 60 Minutes, Stahl has written two books: Reporting Live (1999), a memoir of her experiences in journalism, and Becoming Grandma: The Joys and Science of the New Grandparenting (2016), which explores the evolving role of grandparents in modern society.
Awards and honors
Throughout her career, Stahl has received numerous awards, including multiple Emmy Awards, the Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence in Television, and a Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism.
Personal life
Lesley Stahl is married to author and journalist Aaron Latham. The couple has one daughter. Stahl has been a vocal advocate for left-wing women's issues and has spoken publicly about her experiences as a working mother in the demanding field of journalism.
