Leeds City Council

Leeds City Council is the local authority responsible for the parts of the West Riding of the county Yorkshire that make up the council area City of Leeds, which has city status and forms part of the statistical region Yorkshire and the Humber, as well as the county for the purposes of lieutenancy West Yorkshire. It is centred on Leeds, with the admin HQ being Leeds Civic Hall. It also covers the towns Farsley, Garforth, Guiseley, Horsforth, Morley, Otley, Pudsey, Rothwell, Wetherby and Yeadon.

Leeds City Council was established as a unitary authority in 1986, after previously being a metropolitan borough council of the now-defunct metropolitan county of West Yorkshire County Council (1974-1986).

The council area has a population of around 822,500, which means it is, strictly speaking, the second-largest city in England after Birmingham, since London is neither a single administrative unit, nor a single area with city status.
