Lockard Mitchell Hamilton, known as L. M. Hamilton (March 13, 1918 – April 11, 1991), was a Southern Baptist clergyman and an associate professor for twenty-seven years in the Department of Literature and Languages at Campbellsville University (formerly Campbellsville College) in Campbellsville in Taylor County in central Kentucky.
Background
A native of Salyersville in Magoffin County in eastern Kentucky, Hamilton was a son of Brack Hamilton and the former Dora Wisecup. He obtained his bachelor's degree and Master of Arts from Baptist-affiliated Georgetown College in Georgetown in Scott County, Kentucky. He furthered his education at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and engaged in graduate studies at the University of Kentucky, Morehead State University, and Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green.
Career
Converted to Christianity as a boy, he was called to the ministry at the age of sixteen and licensed to preach in 1936. In 1938, he was ordained in his first pastorate by the Sherman Baptist Church in Dry Ridge in Grant County in northern Kentucky, a part of the Crittenden Association in Williamstown in Grant County. For forty-seven years, Hamilton was the pastor of numerous country and small town churches. When he came to the then Campbellsville College in 1959, he resigned his pastorate of the Gano Avenue Baptist Church in Georgetown. Citing health reason, he retired at the age of sixty-eight from the classroom and the pulpit, effective August 28, 1986.[1]
In 1971, the Business and Professional Women's Club of Campbellsville recognized Hamilton as the outstanding educator in Taylor County for that year. Campbellsville College students honored him for three successive years by presenting the award on which was written, “The Most Popular Professor." The Alumni Association of Campbellsville established the L. M. Hamilton Scholarship in his honor.[1] Hamilton had a special interest in old musical instruments and their restoration.[2]
On July 10, 1938, Hamilton wed the former Mildred Woodruff (June 14. 1919 – May 4, 2017)[3] in her native Georgetown. Mildred was a former cheerleader, played the guitar and clarinet, and sang, danced, and tap danced.[4] The couple had four children: Suetta Williamson of Georgetown, Jerry Thomas Hamilton of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Jane Hope Hamilton, formerly Jane Goff (1945-2018) of Campbellsville,[5] and Joy Ruth Hale of Salt Lake City, Utah. He also had seven grandchildren. Services were conducted on April 14, 1991, at Campbellsville Baptist Church, with Dr. James Edward Jones and Dr. J. Chester Badgett officiating.[1]
L. M. and Mildred Hamilton are interred at Brookside Cemetery in Campbellsville.[1]
