John McCarthy Roll

John McCarthy Roll (February 8, 1947 - January 8, 2011) served as the chief judge for the United States District Court for the District of Arizona, having been nominated by President George H.W. Bush in 1991. He was murdered on January 8, 2011 by gunman Jared Loughner, while attending a public event with U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-Arizona), who was gravely wounded. Roll is the first federal judge to be assassinated since Robert Smith Vance in 1989.
