Howard Homan Buffett (August 13, 1903 – April 30, 1964) was a U.S. Representative from Nebraska from 1943–49 and again from 1951–53. He was known as a business-oriented conservative, being a member of the Old Right and Conservative Coalition. He was also the father of big businessman Warren Buffett.
Buffett was a member of the John Birch Society.[2]
U.S. House of Representatives
Buffett successfully ran for election to the United States House of Representatives from the second congressional district of Nebraska (covering the Omaha area) in 1942.[3] He won re-election in 1944[4] and 1946.[5] After losing narrowly losing in 1948,[6] he returned to the House in the 1950 midterm elections by a landslide.[7]
A strong conservative, Buffett's career was propelled by anti-New Deal sentiment in Nebraska. He opposed the Office of Price Administration after the end of World War II and called for its elimination due to its destructive impact on the U.S. economy. An isolationist who opposed foreign aid,[8] he supported Robert A. Taft for president in the 1952 election. Buffett reportedly elicited "0" ratings from the Americans for Democratic Action.[9] Buffet was often known to say regarding interventionism, "Our Christian ideals cannot be exported to other lands by dollars and guns."[10]
