Holland, Missouri

Holland is a city in southern Pemiscot County, Missouri. It had a population of 229 at the 2010 census.

History

Holland derives its name from J. W. Holland, who along with another man, J. C. Winters, settled on the site in 1871. It grew slowly until the arrival of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad in 1901, at which point it became a significant community. It was incorporated in 1903. Holland's population peaked at 529 in 1920; since then, it has fluctuated somewhat, though generally trending downward.

Geography

Holland is located along U.S. Route 61 in southern Pemiscot County, about three miles southwest of Steele and four miles north of the Arkansas state line. State Route E connects it with Interstate 55 and the city of Cooter to the east. Its exact coordinates are 36°03’27”N 89°52’14”W.

The city has a total land area of 0.17 square miles, and an average elevation of 256 feet, making it among the lowest-lying communities in the county.

Demographics

At the 2010 census, Holland had a total of 229 inhabitants, grouped into 98 households, with a population density of 1,347.1 people per square mile. This figure represented a significant decrease from the 2000 census, when Holland had a population of 246. 93.01% of the inhabitants were White, 0.44% were Native American, 3.49% were from some other race, and 3.06% were from two or more races. Hispanics of any race were 5.68% of the population.

The median age in Holland was 42.2 years, with 22.7% of inhabitants under the age of 18, 4.8% between 18 and 24 years old, 25.4% between 25 and 44, 30.2% between 45 and 64, and 17.0% 65 years old or older. The sex ratio was 55.0% male, 45.0% female.

According to the 2017 American Community Survey, Holland had a median household income of $36,667, and a median family income of $37,083. The unemployment rate was 17.2%. The per capita income was $20,425. About 12.8% of the population lived below the poverty line, including 16.2% of people 65 years old or older.

Holland is served by the South Pemiscot County R-V School District, based in nearby Steele.
