Edmond Malone
Edmond Malone (1741-1812) was an Irish-born Shakespeare scholar who contributed immensely to the integrity of his work, including ordering them chronologically and rejecting forgeries. A stellar student, Malone initially studied law and was a friend of Edmund Burke and Shakespeare scholar Samuel Johnson.
Malone also collected and made accessible much material concerning plays of Elizabethan and Jacobean eras.
Malone published the first attempted chronology of Shakespeare's plays as An Attempt to Ascertain the Order in Which the Plays attributed to Shakspeare were Written (1778), which was included in Samuel Johnson and George Steevens' The Plays of William Shakespeare (2d Ed.).
Malone reverted back a revision made to the person referenced in the love sonnets written by Shakespeare, back from "she" to the original "he".
