E pluribus unum

"E pluribus unum" is Latin for "out of many, one." It embodies the federal structure of the United States, by which the Constitution binds together many states.

This phrase is on the paper money of the United States and its Great Seal of the United States, and was adopted by an Act of Congress in 1782. It was first proposed in 1776.
