Donald Julian Zadeck, Sr. (September 12, 1927 – July 15, 2020),[1] was an industrialist and major civic figure in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Zadeck was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to Samuel Edward Zadeck and the former Dorothy Glatstein. The family moved to Shreveport in 109 and Samuel Edward Zadeck moved to Shreveport in 1933, where Zadeck resided until the time of his death. On November 22, 1951, Zadeck married the former Frances Katzenstein Zadeck. The couple has three children, Donald, Jr. (died 1995), daughter, Julie Zadeck of Shreveport, and his son, Frank Kenneth Zadeck and his wife, the former Lisa Weiss, and their daughter, Rebecca Helen, all of Chappaqua, New York.[2]
Donald attended Creswell Elementary School and graduated from Clifton Ellis Byrd High School and Centenary College, all three institutions in Shreveport. He entered the United States Army Air Force with service in the Philippines and Japan following World War II. After his discharge, he attended the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and served on The Louisiana Law Review. His obituary does not indicate if he was a practicing attorney but indicates that he earned his livelihood through the founding of the Zadeck Energy Group, Inc., and served as the president of the company.[2]
He was a president of the Jewish B'nai Zion Congregation in Shreveport, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce (1977), board chairman of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (1978-1979); president of the Committee of 100 (1980-1981), member of the State of Louisiana Board of Regents (1981-1986). From 1989 to 1998, he was a member of the Shreveport Fire and Police Civil Service Board, of which he was the chairman of the board from 1990 to 1998. He was honored to be asked by Dr. Isaac "Ike" Muslow (1927-2020) to be the first chairman of the LSU Health Shreveport Foundation, a role that he filled from 1997 to 2008. In 1980 and 1981, he was named, respectively, the "Business Leader of the Year" by the Chamber of Commerce and then as "Mr. Shreveport." [2]
Zadeck died in Shreveport at the age of ninety-two and is interred there at Greenwood Cemetery.[2]
