Chess and communism

Chess was popular in Russia among elites prior to the communist takeover, and one of the ironies of history is that the communist dictators spread the conservative game of chess to the masses. Every household in Russia had a chess set.[1]

Arguably the values of individualism, chivalry, opportunity cost, and meritocracy persisted in the vast nation through this board game.

Mikhail Gorbachev, who presided over the breakup, was a devotee of chess.[2] Nearly all leading chess players, most of whom have been from the Soviet Union, have been anti-communists.
