The purpose of a ceasefire is to stop fighting immediately, usually at the line of contact at the time the ceasefire enters into force. However, it is not unusual that some exchange of territory is agreed. It can be temporary or indefinite. A ceasefire can be signed by military leaders and does not foresee a settlement of the underlying reasons of the armed conflict it is about to end.
