Bay County, Michigan

Bay County is a county located in the east-central region of the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the population was 103,856. The county seat is Bay City, which is also the largest city in the county. Bay County is part of the Great Lakes Bay Region and is bordered by Lake Huron's Saginaw Bay. The county is known for its industrial heritage, natural resources, and recreational opportunities.

History

Bay County was established in 1857, carved out of portions of Saginaw, Midland, and Arenac counties. Its name is derived from its location along Saginaw Bay, a significant geographic feature of the region. The area's early economy was centered on lumbering, shipping, and shipbuilding, with the timber industry playing a critical role in the county's development during the 19th century.
