Arenac County, Michigan is a county located in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the county's population was 15,002. The county seat is Standish, and the county is part of the Great Lakes Bay Region. Arenac County is known for its proximity to Saginaw Bay and its rural, scenic environment.
History
Arenac County was established in 1831 and organized in 1883. The name "Arenac" was coined by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, combining the Latin word "arena" (sandy) with "ac," which he derived from Native American languages, to describe the area's sandy shores along Saginaw Bay. The region was originally inhabited by the Ojibwa people before settlers arrived in the mid-19th century.
During its early history, Arenac County’s economy was based on lumbering, agriculture, and fishing. Over time, the county transitioned to a more diversified economy, with tourism and recreation becoming significant contributors.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, Arenac County has a total area of 681 square miles, of which 363 square miles is land and 318 square miles (47%) is water. The county is bordered by Saginaw Bay to the east, making it a popular destination for boating, fishing, and water-related activities.
