Portion control is an approach to combating weight gain and obesity. Portion control consists of eating smaller portions, or less of regular portions. This approach recognizes that the satisfaction of a favorite food after a meal does not require eating large quantities of it. Unlike most diet plans, portion control does not require avoiding favorite foods.

Portion control includes leaving some fattening food on the plate in restaurants, leaving some fattening food in the refrigerator at home, and leaving some in the grocery store when shopping.
