Omar Mateen
Omar Mateen (November 16, 1986 – June 12, 2016) was an American Muslim of Afghan descent, He was born in New Hyde Park, New York, of Afghan parents. Mateen killed 49 people and wounded 53 in what was then the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter in American history. The shooting occurred on June 12, 2016 at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Although Mateen's choice of a nightclub that caters to homosexuals triggered a great deal of speculation concerning his motives, it does not appear that he selected the club for this reason. He found the club by performing a Web search with the phrase "Orlando night clubs".[1] During the shooting, he called 911 to pledged his allegiance to the ISIS terror group.[2] In 2006, Mateen had registered as a Democrat.[3]
