The Neolithic Age is a term used in archaeology and anthropology to designate a stage of cultural or technological development denoted by the spread of farming. The term was coined by amateur archaeologist John Lubbock in the nineteenth century. The Neolithic was the third part of the Stone age, preceded by the Mesolithic which in turn was preceded by the Paleolithic.

Because the Neolithic is defined by the rise of agriculture it occurred at different times for different regions. According to the general scientific consensus the neolithic first began in the middle east around 9500 BC, spreading to parts of Europe and the Indian subcontinent by around 7000 BC.

According to Young Earth Creationism the Neolithic Age took place in the more recent past.
