Mark O. Hatfield

Mark O. Hatfield (b. 1922 - August 7, 2011) served as the US Senator from Oregon for 30 years (five terms) from January 1967 through January 1997. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Prior to his election to the US Senate, he was in the Oregon legislature, was elected as Oregon Secretary of State (1957 - 1959), and served as Governor of Oregon (1959 - 1967). He is a Republican. Hatfield fought in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and was part of the occupying force at Hiroshima after the atom bomb was dropped there. These events, and Hatfield's participation, are described in some detail in Tom Brokaw's 1998 book The Greatest Generation.
