Dame Gracie Fields (1898-1979), born in Rochdale, was a popular British singer and film star in the mid twentieth century. She achieved wide popularity working in 1920s music hall; this became stardom in the 1930s when she moved from the halls to the film industry, with films such as 'Sally in our Alley' (1931) and 'Sing as we Go' (1934) cheering depression-era audiences.
