San Francisco is a liberal city in California. It has a higher proportion of homosexuals than any other city in the United States[Citation Needed], and in 2004, its mayor, Gavin Newsom, attempted to perform same-sex marriages despite the practice being explicitly illegal under California law. Not surprisingly, the marriages were nullified by the courts shortly thereafter.

Famous San Francisco landmarks include the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island.
