The automobile, or car, was invented in the 19th century by Benz, a German. But it was Henry Ford, an American, who made the automobile popular by mass-producing it on the world's first assembly line in Detroit, which became the "Automobile Capital of the World" in the 1950s.
Today many people buy cars from overseas, like Toyotas and Hondas. Very few cars are still made in the U.S.; American brands include Ford, Chevy, and Hummer.
President Bush has urged car manufacturers to produce cars that can run on ethanol or diesel, to cut down on America's dependance on foreign oil.
