Modern architecture, modernist architecture or simply modernism, is an architectural movement that was popular in the early-mid 20th century. The modernist movement was an attempt to create an architecture underpinned by functionalism, as opposed to aesthetics.[1] Modern architecture, in particular brutalism, has been criticised for being unattractive and bland, and is strongly associated with communism (the Lenin Mausoleum in Moscow being a good example) and other totalitarian ideologies. Critics like Charles Jencks and Rem Koolas argue that modernism fails to engage with the emotional, cultural, and symbolic needs of people.[2]
