Hockey, or ice hockey (as opposed to field hockey), is a game played by opposing teams of six players made up of three forwards, two defensemen, and a goaltender, or goalie. The players skate on a sheet of ice and attempt to shoot a hard rubber projectile called a puck into the opposing team's goal, or net.
The sport is popular in Canada, Europe (notably Sweden, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia and Finland) and some parts of the United States (notably Minnesota and the East Coast region).
The top professional league in North America is the National Hockey League (NHL), and the league championship trophy is called the Stanley Cup. The Montréal Canadiens have won the Stanley Cup 23 times, the most of any team in the league.
