Opium is a narcotic drug, a crude extract of the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum. Morphine, and its prodrug codeine, are the narcotic substances that occur naturally in opium. Further processing of opium produces heroin, synthesised from the dry latex of the opium poppy, and other opiate drugs, so called for their source.
